At a
distance of 17 km from Bhandardara, Amruteshwar Temple is an
ancient Shiva
temple situated
on the banks of holy river Pravara at Ratanwadi village in the
Igatpuri region of Maharashtra. It is among the popular Bhandardara tourist
places and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is
considered to be over 1,200 year old. This beautiful stone carved temple was
built by the rulers of Shilahara dynasty in 9th century AD. This is one of 12
Shiva temples built by King Jhanj.
located at a close distance
from this Shiva temple.
From a distance, the temple looks like a cow sitting
cross-legged on the bank of a river. As we get closer, its sculptural
appearance, curvaceous structure begins to attract the mind. The temple has
Nandimandap, Gabhara, Sabhamandap and Shikhar and has entrances on both the
east and west sides. As soon as you enter, the carvings here take
over. The carved pillars, the carved entrances, the various geometric designs
on the outer walls, the sculptures on the inner walls, the sculptures on the
roof all begin to enchant one by one. Like walking in a cave.
The Amruteshwar Temple has been constructed in
Hemadpanthi architectural style with beautiful rock carvings on the main
shrine. It was built with black and red stones. The ceiling and the walls of
the temple are decorated with some impressive and lovely murals. There is a
mantapa with 12 pillars. All the pillars have beautifully carved statues and
flowers.
The peak of this
temple is equally carved, rich! the small replicas of the peaks on it again,
the shuknas on the front side. The ‘nagara style’ of the ancient architecture resting on
the walls of Amruteshwar. While enjoying all these beauties, our own mind gets
confused. Then you see Amruteshwar in such a confused state. In fact, this
Shivpindi of Amruteshwar was also made of five such carved layers. But someone's
head got cracked and they set aside the stone thinking as God became old and
installed a new Shivlinga in its place. Because of this, all the blue colors of
the sky seem to have come to rest on this water, just like that magnificent
rock temple of Amruteshwar seems to occupy all the space. Any architecture has
such a knack for nature that it still opens up. Was pleased.
The locals call this Pushkarni Vishnutirtha and hear the
story of the construction of this temple and shrine from the fourteen gems of
Samudramanthan. Coming out of these stories to find the true history, we have
to come and stop near a king named Zanj in the tenth century. This Zanj king
built a single beautiful Shivalaya at the source of twelve major rivers between
Godavari and Bhima. Amruteshwar is build on the origin place of the river
Pravara!
The temple is located in Ratanwadi village
which is the base village for famous Ratangad Fort. Travelling by road to this
temple is very difficult due to rough roads on the hills.Ratanwadi is
separated from Bhandardara by Arthur Lake.
Ratanwadi village is also approached by boat from Bhandardara. By boat, it is a 6 km journey and further it is a 4
km walk till Ratanwadi.
This artistic obsession of the ancestors is
sometimes greatly appreciated. Today a thousand and one years have passed. Time
also moved on. This construction here has now become a history. It became a
part of nature here. Just like those mountain-bushes, stagnant water!
